Lotus Gallery has the pleasure of presenting “The world we live in" solo exhibition featuring a collective body of works by artist Nguyen Thi Chau Giang, an established and important contemporary artist, renowned for her works on silk. This exhibition marks the artist's 10th solo exhibition, presenting 28 silk paintings, 1 fold screen and 1 installation, all created between 2010 and 2023.
Chau Giang’s silk painting has gained its own contemporary momentum as she continues to follow the conventional wisdom of the old masters with a multi-layering method while creating a sense of novelty within its own boundaries reflecting her own experiences. She’s most recognisable for her signature 2 faces silk painting, where layers of ink and watercolours were applied on both sides, creating a depth visual effect.
Within the 4 chapters of the exhibition: “On the chair”, “Hidden Flowers”, “Hidden Dragon” and “My feelings, your feelings, our feelings” present an ongoing conceptual and visual narrative centred around the identities and roles of women in Vietnam's society. The intimate circle of thoughts, emotions and expressions of women is a complex, multi-layered and fascinating one. The contemplation of women’s inner struggles with conflicts of social values is depicted with an emphasis on her practices. Socio-political issues have always intrigued Chau Giang’s interest, as she has given a voice to women since the beginning of her career, through her practices supporting feminism and gender equality movements.
Hence, the exhibition is to be seen as a mirror reflecting and reminiscing the story of our life through the portrayal of the past, the present and the future. Audiences can easily feel connected and empathise as they recognise themselves, or their loved one through the various stages within the flow of life over time.
This will be the first time Chau Giang presents 2 sets of quadriptych silk paintings along with series of works previously exhibited at the 10th Australia Pacific Triennial (APT) in Vietnam. Additionally, a reproduction of a three-story high silk installation would mark her return to installation work after 10 years.
The exhibition is on view at Wiking Salon, a private art salon, from August to October 2023.
Đặc biệt nhất, đây sẽ là lần đầu tiên tại Việt Nam, hoạ sĩ trưng bày hai bộ tranh lụa tứ quý cùng với bộ tác phẩm đã từng được trưng bày tại Australia Pacific Triennale (APT) lần thứ 10. Ngoài ra, việc tái hiện một tác phẩm sắp đặt bằng lụa cao ba tầng sẽ đánh dấu sự trở lại của cô với nghệ thuật sắp đặt sau hơn 10 năm.
